McNairn Packaging converts paper rolls into disposable food packaging products for major companies and supermarket brands across the United States. From food wrappings found in grocery stores for Boar’s Head and Sysco to Food Chains like Dunkin’ Donuts and Texas Roadhouse, McNairn Packaging is one of the industry’s leading manufacturing companies and is a trusted brand by all our customers.

McNairn Packaging has a multi-step process that takes raw materials and turns them into finished product using multiple teams and machines. While dealing with food packaging, McNairn Packaging has regular inspections for quality, safety, and sanitation to ensure our customers receive the highest quality of product and our employees work in a safe environment. As a machine operator, you will be a part of the process and able to learn various tasks to assist with creating food packaging used in the food industry today.

Waxer (Printing Press) Operator:

  • Waxer Machines are responsible for printing logos and other information on rolls of paper and applying wax coating to protect the paper during the food heating process and prevent oils and other food biproducts from leaking through the paper. This is the first step and often most critical step for most other machines within the production plant.
  • Availability: 2nd Shift and 3rd Shift

Sheeter and Sleeter Operator:

  • Sheeter and Sleeter Machines cut printed and waxed rolls of paper into smaller sheets, either to be used by other machines or to be packaged for shipment to our customers. These finished goods are then sent to the Cutter to make smaller sheets or used for pan-liners and various other orders of larger sheets of paper.
  • Availability:

Interfolder Operator:

  • Interfolder Machines also slice waxed rolls into smaller paper but are more typically used for dispenser boxes used for handling smaller food products, such as donuts or kitchen wrappings. The Interfolder technology stacks sheets in a way that when pulled from a box, it also pulls the next sheet up for easy grab-and-go.
  • Availability: 2nd Shift and 3rd Shift

Cutter Operator:

  • Once the Sheeter sends paper here, it is cut into smaller sheets for use in basket liners and other smaller tasks. Cutters are made up of smaller teams in charge of packaging paper into boxes, constructing boxes from corrugated boxes, and placing labels on the boxes to meet customer specifications.
  • Availability:

Bag Machine Operators:

  • Bag Machines function as a smaller printing press, also capable of constructing many variations of bags for customers to use, such as Jersey Mike’s Subs and Grocery Store Bread. Bag Machines often include a complete process from raw product to finished goods.
  • Availability: 3rd Shift

Material Handlers:

  • While not machine operators, Material Handlers provide a vital role in the manufacturing process. Material Handlers are in change of ensuring materials are moved to various machines and help with receiving and shipping requirements to ensure products are shipped on time, every time. Material handlers work with all types of mobile equipment, from fork and clamp trucks to pallet jacks.
  • Availability: 2nd Shift

Press Assistant:

  • Press Assistants help Waxers and Bag Machine Operators in their production tasks. They assist with the printing process, helping setup printing plates, keeping printing plates clean, and monitor and mix inks for the various print jobs.
  • Availability: 2nd Shift and 3rd Shift

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Machine Operators oversee the complete process of their assigned machines. From setup to shutdown and everything in between, Machine Operators need to read and understand Manufacturing Orders (MO) to ensure the machine is setup correctly for the job required, the machine runs efficiently and at the required speed, and the quality specifications are being met. Machine Operators also conduct quality checks and basis weights to ensure products are meeting the customer needs. Once the job is done, Machine Operators clean equipment and ensure they are ready for the next job.
  • Machine Operators are responsible for basic troubleshooting of machines and reporting irregularities. If the machine is not running at its usual pace or there are deviations, the machine operators must speak with their supervisor to ensure maintenance is called to diagnose the problem. In addition, Machine Operators are required to do preventive checks on the machine, assisted by maintenance, when possible, when their machine is between jobs and during scheduled machine downtime.
  • Machine Operators must work effectively in a team and be able to communicate across different teams. Many machines and jobs are connected and work together to make multi-stage products. Most machines work in teams to allow for breaks and prevent strain from repetitive movement. We require employees to work together and follow company policies to ensure the work environment is pleasant and welcoming for all diversity.
  • Machine Operators are in charge of ensuring their work areas are clean and safe. Safety is our #1 concern, and we rely on our workers to let us know when something is unsafe. This includes cleaning up spills from ink and paper to avoid slips and falls. McNairn Packaging regularly hosts events where we clean and organize machine areas to ensure a safe and sanitary environment is kept in compliance to customer demands and quality audits.
  • Every job has a Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), put together by many staff members and floor workers to ensure maximum safety. JHAs are living documents, subject to change as OSHA laws evolve and employees find safety concerns. McNairn Packaging rewards workers for working safely and bringing safety issues to the management’s concern, promoting a safe work environment so everyone can enjoy time with their families.
  • Production supervisors and management staff often have tasks that need to be completed, such as helping with machines not typically assigned to a machine operator or training that must be conducted to keep in compliance with OSHA and company guidelines. Machine Operators are sometimes asked to work outside of the scope of their regularly scheduled machines to assist with operators and cover other machines. We require machine operators to remain flexible with their work environment as the company continues to expand.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or trade school equivalent GED. 2 years of manufacturing experience is preferred.
  • Basic math and reading skills. Must be able to read and understand company policies, procedures, job hazard analysis, and manufacturing orders. MOs have specifications that must be met at specific schedules, and machine operators are required to follow MOs to ensure customers receive their products on time.
  • Basic to excellent mechanical ability and manual dexterity. Machine Operators need to able to identify problems with machines and assist maintenance in fixing or troubleshooting these problems.
  • Excellent communication skills, especially while working in a team and with other teams around the production floor. Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely. Many jobs also require machine operators to be able to work independently after training has been completed.
  • Able to work within the physical limits of the job. Job includes standing most of shift and may require lifting heavy materials over 50 pounds. Work conditions also include sharp tools, rotating equipment, lifting machine shafts, and adjusting heavy rolls of paper. Duties require continuous mental and visual attention to ensure proper print quality and machine operation.
